There are cinemas in these locations:
Funchal - Madeira Shopping (7 lounges)
Funchal - Madeira Forum (6 lounges)
Camacha (2 lounges)
Porto Santo

Usually there are afternoon, evening and night
showings, but check the local paper or
online first.

The films are normally shown in their language of
origin, with portuguese subtitles, but its best to
ask if you don't speak portuguese.
Theatre
In 1887 the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias (Madeira Theatre) presented its
opening performance. Aside from its shows, the building is also quite a
spectacle and worth a visit. The theatre is based in central Funchal.

As well as the more regular performances, it also hosts Madeira's annual
international film festival in November each year.

Situated on the Avenida Arriaga, Funchal, you will probably have to go there
to find out what's on, as it is not big on publicity, but mostly they perform
theatre plays (in Portuguese), with the occasional classical concert.
Shows & Cabarets
Most of the shows take place in the larger Funchal hotels, although the
Casino also does nightly shows. Outside of Funchal, you might be struggling
to find anything noteworthy.

Check the Madeira press and at hotel receptions to find out whats on where
and when. Also travel bulletin boards for Madeira can be a useful resource.
Night Clubs & Discos
Late nights in Funchal, no problem!
Late nights elsewhere, big problem!

Whilst the rest of Madeira closes down at 10pm
or midnight, or maybe 2am in larger towns,
Funchal's disco set is just coming to life.

Some of the larger hotels have their own
disco's, as does the Casino, but the price of
drinks can be excessive, so its worth checking
out the independent competition, even if you do
have to pay an entrance fee. That said, expect
to pay €5 for a spirit with a dash of mixer, and
€3 for a bottle of beer at club prices.

The biggest and best known club is ‘Vespas’,
which is a warehouse venue that also attracts
some of the bigger name djs and acts.  It's open
Wednesday through to Sunday, midnight until
6am. The clubs 'Marginal' & 'Jam' keep the
same hours.

‘Chameleon’ disco in Funchal is very popular
with the youngsters and is open everyday, yet
keeps more traditional opening times everyday
from 7pm until 4am.

Another well known Funchal club is Latina's
[formerly Gloria Latina] , hidden away near the
Savoy Hotel, which has a salsa theme.

Porto Santo island also has a nightlife scene,
but outside of peak season (June to August) it
is a bit on the weak side.

You can listen and dance to live music, salsa,
techno and dance music at places such as
Taxei, Challenger, and Luisinho's.
Live Music
You can regularly find live music performances
without having to go to a club or hotels. Even
some smaller bars have regular acts, if you
can track them down. Madeira, being blessed
with such a fine climate is fortunate to be able
to host much of its entertainment out of doors.

The traditional Portuguese music known as
'Fado' can be heard in some venues, but is not
a musical style that suits everybody's taste.

Again, most of the action is in Funchal, but
there are plenty of other places around
Madeira where you will find performers of a
much more local flavour than you might see in
Funchal.

If you are near to one of the larger towns on
Madeira,  you may find outdoor performances
paid for by the local council, or even a political
party as a vote swinger. These are often quality
acts, sometimes from mainland Portugal.

You can find international bands on the island
at times, but its quite rare, and more likely to
be 'blasts from the past' who are stretching or
reviving an age old career, such as UB40, who
performed at one time.

The Madeira Theatre in Funchal occasionally
puts on live classical concerts, but they don't
publicise themselves very well to visitors.
Dancing
The subject of dancing for the younger generation is probably catered for on
this page in the section on Night Clubs & Disco's, but for the rest there some
things you should know.

Traditional Madeiran dancing in traditional costumes is found around and
about the island, more so than in Funchal. People of all ages take part,
dancing to authentic Madeiran music. If you see a town or village decked out
in flowers and colourful decorations, the chances are that there is a festival
(festa) being celebrated, and there is a good chance you will see some
dancing performed.

In Funchal every February, it is carnival season, with dancing parades going
on for hours. It is a marvelous and colourful spectacle, something along the
lines of its Brazilian equivalent, but of course on a much smaller scale.

Some of the clubs, like The Fugitivo also have dancing shows, as do some of
the hotels.

If you want to dance yourself, but not to disco music, the larger hotels can
probably steer you in the right direction.
Hotel Entertainment
Most of the larger hotels in Funchal have some sort of regular entertainment
laid on for their guests and outsiders, and its said that this is to compensate
for the lack of nearby nightlife.

This is just not true as far as Funchal is concerned. The real reason, for
sure, is to keep those cash rich tourists inside their doors paying 2 or 3
times more than the going rate for their drinks.

Outside of Funchal, there are few hotels that offer quality, if any
entertainment, but the best way to check out the action is through the
individual hotels adverts and websites, or through a Madeira bulletin board.

Casino
If you are well equipped to lose a few euros,
then the casino in Funchal might be just the
place to go. Madeira's only casino has a
range of  games including blackjack,
roulette and poker, an electronic horse
race, and slot machines.

As well as the gambling, the casino has
bars and restaurants, and also has a
nightly show. Open until 3am nightly, and
4am on Friday & Saturday. Remember to

Madeira Nightlife
Madeira is not a venue that offers huge choices in terms of nightlife. What there is exists mainly in
Funchal, and whilst you can find everything you could find in any major city, it is not present in vast
quantities. This page will give you a basic guide as to what to expect and where to find it, and if you
are here on holiday there will be ample to suit every taste during your stay. If you are looking for
something particular on Madeira you would do well to check with the local press, and you may find
additional events of interest on the 'Events' page of this website (on the menu on the left).

Outside of Funchal, you may find other towns that offer additional events and nightlife activities, in
Machico, Calheta or on Porto Santo for example, but nightlife 'hot spots' just don't really exist.
