| Madeira Hotels & Accommodation When visiting Madeira, it used to be the case that most people would have a hotel included in their holiday package, a situation that is gradually changing. With internet access, low cost flights, and varying budgets, many people now prefer to make their own accommodation arrangements, and that in turn gives the advantage of much more choice, both within Funchal and around other parts of Madeira Island. You of course can still have the hotel with swimming pool, gym, laid on entertainment, and high levels of personal service, or choose a guest house or other accommodation of a much more basic kind in any town or city, or choose from the many rural locations that can offer the facilities you require. Starting with Funchal, this is where the vast majority of tourists are based, either through choice or because that was the offer of the package holiday. The British mostly tend to stay in Funchal because normally that's all that is offered, where other western european nations are a bit more ambitious and venture further out, often as part of an active walking holiday. Self catering accommodation is also widely available through Madeira's main hotels. Aside from the cost of the hotel which you will obviously know in advance, your holiday in Funchal will cost you considerably more than elsewhere, but that's city life. In particular this refers to the costs of eating and drinking in hotel restaurants, and street restaurants and bars. For example the price of a beer in the wrong place could cost 3 or more times as much that you would pay in a locals bar in the middle of nowhere, and some of the hotel shops have poor reputations for overpricing. Most of Funchal's main hotels are situated west of the city centre, a not insignificant climb for the unfit, although buses and taxis are plentiful. This area is commonly referred to as the hotel or tourist zone. But that's pretty much it, hotels and restaurants, unless you head towards the city centre. Outside of Funchal, although there are several large hotels along the southerly coast, in Calheta, Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Brava, Cabo Girão, Caniço and going further east towards the airport and Machico. Also in the north in Porto Moniz and São Vicente, and Porto Santo of course. There are also camp sites on both islands. Often more common for the budget traveller is the use of a 'residência' where you can stay cheaply for as few nights as you want, alongside many of the local people who stay for months or even years. These don't tend to offer much apart from a room with a kitchen, and sometimes a shared bathroom. Another important option for accommodation is known as a 'Quinta'. These are ex-farms, or large residences of wealthy landowners, converted into 'country manors', usually with very good reputations and facilities. Bear in mind your location and transport requirements though if taking this option. These days it's very easy to find out the prices of the hotels and accommodation on Madeira and Porto Santo through various websites. A search on Google will bring up many websites, including those of the hotels, travel agents, and also those 'broker' sites that act as an information and booking portal for hundreds or thousands of hotels worldwide (which normally includes Madeira!). Choosing this method to enquire about hotels and availability is a wise move, as usually you can compare facilities, prices, and availability very quickly, often getting very competitive rates. |
