| Madeira has many banking institutions, independent, national & international. Most the national banks have branches in the major towns. Normal banking hours are 8.30 am until 3.00 pm Monday to Friday, though some larger branches stay open later for appointments and other services. The Main Banks are: Bank of Portugal (Funchal) Barclays Bank (only in Funchal) Banco BPI Banco Espirito Santo (BES) Banco Santander Totta Banif (Banco Internacional do Funchal) BPN (Banco Português de Negócios) BPI Millennium BCP Montepio Geral Caixa Geral de Depositos There are also currency exchange offices, mainly in Funchal. The usual opening hours are 9.00 am until 1.00 pm, and 2.00 pm until 7.00 pm, Monday to Friday. Saturday hours differ. Banks normally charge the most for the exchange of small amounts, whereas exchange without charge (but at a lesser rate) can be obtained at other outlets. Multibanco machines (cashpoints) accept most types of plastic cards and will dispense Euros regardless of the country of the card origin. If using a card from another country, the instructions should display instructions in English. Charges for this service vary depending on the banks involved and whether currency conversion is necessary. Cashpoint / Multibanco machines are fairly sophisticated, and allow not only cash withdrawal and enquiries, but also permit the setting up of direct debits, money transfers, and the payment of bills. Interbank transactions within Portugal and Madeira are almost instantaneous, and this should also be the case with the other Euro members once the machines have been upgraded (2008). The larger banks also have internet websites that customers can use to transfer funds, pay bills etc. Some of the banks have these in english as well as in Portuguese. |
