Regular tooth / teeth & dental care is essential to maintain good oral hygiene and avoid tooth ache & other problems. You should visit a dentist regularly to have your teeth checked and have treatment where needed. Most dentists offer xrays, fillings, caps, cleaning & polishing. You should clean your teeth regularly using a reputable toothpaste or tooth cleaning product. This will help avoid build up of plaque and prevent tooth rot and tooth ache.
Toothache Information Toothache is pain in the area of your jaw and face. It is usually caused when a nerve in the root of a tooth becomes irritated. However, other problems such as infection, decay, or the loss of a tooth, can also cause toothache. In the middle of every tooth, there is space containing dental pulp. Dental pulp is a soft, spongy tissue containing lots of sensitive nerves and blood vessels. The pulp cavity is surrounded with layers of hard tissue to protect it. The outermost layer is called enamel, and is harder than bone. Toothache occurs when the pulp inside your tooth gets inflamed. This is known as pulpitis and is often caused by dental decay (carries). Dental decay is when bacteria in your mouth break down the enamel of a tooth. Holes (cavities) in the tooth develop, exposing the nerves underneath. If left untreated, the pulp inside your tooth will die and become infected. This will lead to an abscess forming, causing a severe and continuous throbbing pain. Eating or drinking something that is very hot or cold may also give you toothache because it touches the nerves in the pulp.
Dental Decay Introduction Dental decay is the same as tooth decay. It is also known as dental caries. It results in a cavity in the tooth and if untreated can spread from the enamel (the hard outer covering of the tooth) into the softer dentine inside. The decay can progress more rapidly in the softer dentine and will eventually reach the dental pulp (nerve and blood vessels) in the centre of the tooth and cause this to become infected and inflamed. Once the pulp is infected it may die and bacteria can breed in the empty pulp chamber pushing beyond the end of the tooth root to form a dental abscess.
'ORDEM DOS MÉDICOS' is the governing body covering doctors and medical facilities and specialists. You can contact them if you have a complaint about medical personnel, services and facilities on Madeira. MAKING A COMPLAINT ABOUT HEALTH CARE PROBLEMS You can access an online complaints book, instead of asking for the 'Livro de Reclamacões', go to: Health Care Complaints Book Online At this stage, this is only for complaints on matters of health care, but the principle is good, and hopefully it will extend to other areas of business. It's certainly a lot easier than doing this in the environment where the complaint was incurred. The form is in Portuguese, but is not too hard to understand.
