| Eye injuries Introduction The structure of the face is designed to protect the eyes from injury. Each eyeball is set into a protective socket of bone (the orbit) and the eyelids can close at great speed to form a barrier to foreign objects. Because of this protection your eyes will often escape unharmed if you injure your face. Injuries to the eyes can include: scratches and cuts, blows to the eyes or the eye socket, burns to the eyes, chemicals burning or irritating the eyes. A scratch or cut can damage the structures near the surface of the eye: the eyelid, the conjunctiva - the delicate lining of the outside of the eye, the cornea - the clear, protective 'window' at the front of the eye, the sclera - the tough, white outer layer of the eyeball, the iris - the coloured part, and the lens - the clear part which focuses light on the retina. A blow to the eye, or near to it, can damage the structures near the surface. It can also damage the structures at the back of the eye: the retina - the light-sensitive membrane that acts like the film in a camera, and the optic nerve - the nerve that sends the images the eye produces to the brain. Burns to the eyes can affect just the eyelids if they have closed quickly enough to protect the eyeball from heat, and if the heat is not too extreme. However, extreme heat can burn the eyeball itself and affect all the structures within it. Chemicals can burn or irritate the eye in the same way as heat and can cause damage to all the structures in the eye, depending on the type of chemical and the severity of the exposure to it. If you sustain an eye injury, you should seek medical help immediately. You can consult your optician about other problems with your eyes and eyesight. |

| MAKING A COMPLAINT ABOUT HEALTH CARE PROBLEMS Did you know, you can now access an online complaints book, instead of asking for the 'Livro de Reclamacões', go to: Health Care Complaints Book Online At this stage, this is only for complaints on matters of health care, but the principle is good, and hopefully it will extend to other areas of business. It's certainly a lot easier than doing this in the environment where the complaint was incurred. The form is in Portuguese, but is not too hard to understand. |
