Animal Welfare on Madeira

Sadly, animal welfare is low on the Madeira priority
list. As a result it is not uncommon to see homeless,
sick, injured, and maltreated animals. Even so
called 'pets' and 'farm animals' can be seen in poor
condition or health, or often living in unsuitable
conditions or surroundings. There is no RSPCA.

The police will do nothing, the fire brigade certainly
won't rescue a cat from a tree, and it is unlikely that
you will find anyone locally who will take much
interest, at least without some prompting!

This is unacceptable, though to some extent
understandable, in a community where the slaughter
of the pig is an occasion for major celebration.
Education is the real long term key, but the
information provided here is to help with the
problems of today found on Madeira.

Fortunately, there are people on Madeira who do
care, and if you come across an animal in an
unacceptable condition or surroundings (and in that
include homeless cats and dogs) or just feel you
need to do something, then you can help.

See if you can find someone local nearby who can
help, preferably someone who speaks english and
portuguese.

Contact
SPAD (see the panel to the side) to seek
advice or offer assistance.

Take the animal to
VetFunchal, and tell them you
found it, they will not charge you for any treatment
necessary. They will also accept donations, and do
neutering from donated funds. Send donations to Dr.
Teixeira at SOS ANIMAL, VetFunchal, Calçada da
Cobouqueira 61, 9000-171, Funchal.

Contact Thelma Brown of
NAFS (Neutering And
Feeding of Strays) to make donations to feed stray
animals (either food or money donations) or to offer
assistance in the feeding of strays in their local
environment. Thelma is the group co-ordinator, she
can be contacted on [00351] 291 822 543.

Financial donations can be made by bank transfer:

or send a cheque to payable to Doris Thelma Brown.

Thank You So Much !
The SPAD charity is inundated with
requests to take in stray animals, and
as a result have a waiting list for
admissions. This is partly due to the fact
that by law, all dogs have to be
registered and microchipped, and the
situation is worsened by the fact that
most people will not neuter their
animals. SPAD have insufficient space
and resources, to do more, and sadly
they have to put down more animals
than they can rehome.

Stray Dog - missing since November 2007
This beautiful well trained little dog was
probably abandoned by her owners after
producing puppies. She lived on the
streets, living off scraps and generosity,
hoping for a new owner. She then
disappeared  (November 2007)
Preta - the name given by locals - means 'Blackie'
This dog lived on the streets of Ribeira
Brava for 3 years, but was eventually
homed in Funchal in 2007.

Goats are a fairly common site, tied up along
the levadas of Madeira. They just stay in one
spot, until they have eaten everything in reach,
and are then moved along to another patch.
