Shopping On Madeira You can find practically anything you can think of somewhere on Madeira, as you can in other european countries and cities, it just about knowing where to go. Anyone who has visited Madeira before will know that the vast majority of shops are based in Funchal, with few large malls and stores (aside from supermarkets) situated elsewhere, but that said, there is little that you cannot buy in some of the larger towns like Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Machico and Santa Cruz, its just a question of numbers and scale. To find the geographical distribution of shops around the island, in case you want to visit somewhere for the day, you might find some guidance on the regional advertising pages here. Within Funchal, you will find familiar international store names, and many smaller shops with both portuguese and english names. Many of these are situated in the shopping malls spread randomly around the city, and a trip to one of the biggest would involve a car, bus, or taxi journey. Depending on the prices you are used to, shopping on Madeira can seem pretty good value, and even internationally produced imported goods, such as electrical items, can be cheaper in price as the local economy couldn't support the higher prices found in and around other western european towns and cities. For instance, locally produced good are probably made by workers earning a less than €500 per month, so even taking into account the higher costs from importing materials from abroad, prices are and should remain stable and competitive. There is no doubt that the island and especially the Funchal shopping scene appeals to women, with numerous shoe and clothes shops, with a large sprinkling of jewellers, hairdressers and beauty saloons. The more mundane day to day shopping is also fairly easy, as aside from the smaller local shops and grocery stores, there are 3 major supermarket chains with stores spread around the island (mostly along the southern coast) that between them sell virtually everything you could want, even beyond the normal food, drink and household items. Prices are cheap compared to the other main western european countries, especially if you avoid imported brand names for your food and drink purchases, even though they are usually readily available.

If you have a serious complaint that you cannot resolve with the management and you wish to take further, you can ask for the 'Livro de Reclamações' (the complaints book). This should always be as a last resort, as there can be serious repercussions for the business involved.
SALDOS (SALES) The Winter sales in the shops of Madeira are officially held between 28th December and 28th February, whilst the official Summer sales run between 15th July and 15th September. These are dates defined by law. If a shop wishes to hold an 'out of season sale' it cannot be called 'Saldos', but will usually be called 'promoção', 'redução' or 'descontos' instead.
