Madeira - The Secret Is Out!

Madeira has many years of experience of attracting and entertaining
tourism customers. For years the island has been visited by the older
generations, mainly from the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, the
Scandinavian Countries, and mainland Portugal of course.

Other regular visitors arrive from South Africa, America, Canada,
Brazil, Venezuela, Belgium, Italy, and even China, Poland and Hungary
are worthwhile contributors to Madeira's tourism numbers.

Most visitors to Madeira arrive at Madeira Airport, but many arrive by
cruise ship to the harbour at Funchal, bring all nationalities but
especially British, Italian, and American tourist. Often the cruise ships
stop for just a few hours, which means to little time to get out and
about and explore the island, but it's a fact that many of the cruise
ship arrivals book their next and subsequent holidays on Madeira, this
time staying a week or two, often more, with some going over to the
island of Porto Santo.

Why the island is such an attraction to older customers is a bit of a
mystery really. Or is it just a well kept secret? Madeira, aside from its
mountainous terrain, caters well for the silver generations, many are
repeat customers, back and forth year after year. For many
Europeans the prices seem cheap, the food and drink is fantastic, and
the people are welcoming and wonderful, with a culture that many
people envy.

And then there is the island itself, geographically speaking that is.
Such wonderful scenery, flowers all year around, and a climate that is
the envy of the whole of europe. Then of course there is those famous
levada walks, where you can be in another world for a day
experiencing natural Madeira at its absolute best.

However, the end of the big secret has ended, with the arrival of low
cost airlines to the island, Madeira's secrets are about to be shared
with a much wider and more youthful audience ........... lets see what
happens!

Madeira has a substantial and effective tourism machine, with a good
presence on the internet, not just for tourism, but for the government
at regional and district level, as well as several substantial privately
owned websites shouting the praises of the archipelago.
Turismo da Madeira ought to be your first point of call if you need more
information on what is available to the islands tourists & visitors.

Website for Turismo da Madeira                                based in Funchal.

If you select the link above, you can then select your own language from a
choice of 5 visitor languages.

Most of the major towns on the island have Tourist Information Offices, and
they are well signposted for you to find. However, outside of Funchal, most
are manned by one person, so when they go on holiday, or due to a public
holiday, then you may occasionally find them closed. Anyway, doing your
own research through websites like this one means you will come prepared
and be able to manage your own itinerary and travel arrangements.
It is not the intention of
madeira4u to duplicate the role
of any websites mentioned here,
or the information contained
within, we just aim to save you
time and effort finding them and
to direct you to them with the
ease of a single click. If you
come across further resources
on the internet that would be
useful for other visitors to
Madeira, please email
feedback@madeira4u.com with
the website address and we will
consider adding the link to this
page. Thank you!
This next link for a website labelled  'Madeira Island's complete tourism destination guide!' is an
excellent resource for finding out further information.

If you don't find the information you need,  you can use this BULLETIN BOARD, in english, to ask
your question. This is the most popular Madeiran bulletin board for english speakers.
The Madeira Archipelago website is full of excellent photographs, old and new, of all aspects of
life on Madeira, its people, its natural history, geography, and anything else you need to know to
appreciate more your stay on Madeira Island.
The Art of Weather Forecasting on Madeira

The climate on Madeira is truly wonderful for its inhabitants, and for most of the island also fairly
predictable, and to link to a weather website here is a calculated gamble in not putting people off.
This link will take you to a very comprehensive weather forecast page that will give you current
and forecast weather for several days ahead.

However, the weather systems shown are atlantic and high level weather systems, and it is highly
likely that you will find something completely different for the location you are interested in or
visiting. As a rule the south and west coastal regions of the island are the driest, warmest and
sunniest areas most of the time. Places like Ponta do Sol and Ribeira Brava are warm, dry and
sunny practically all year, with an occasional but rare cloudy or rainy day. If you go higher, the
weather can change dramatically in temperature and precipitation, and the same rule applies the
further north you travel. That said, the weather for the whole island and also Porto Santo is never
too hot or cold, and very consistent in temperature day to day, matched in europe only by the
Canary Islands, which can get unbearably hot in summer.

If you look at this webpage, take the information with a large pinch of salt, although the
temperature guides given for Funchal are pretty much accurate.
