| Madeira's famous annual carnival parade took place on 2nd February, 2008. The Allegoric Parade (always on a Saturday night) takes place with floats, and numerous participants; around 1,500 in 2008. The theme of the 2008 carnival was countries of the world, bringing a huge variety of costumes, colour, dancing and music to the evenings entertainment. The quality and design of the floats and costumes was outstanding, as always, and the performances of the dancing participants well synchronised and enchanting in most of the displays. The parade started at Praça da Autonomia, traveled along Avenida do Mar and Avenida das Comunidades Madeirenses, then went back in the opposite direction going around the Marina Shopping centre via the roundabout (Rotunda do Infante), along Avenida Arriaga, turning left into Avenida Zarco, along Rua Câmara Pestana and finishing at Praça do Município at 11.00 p.m. The 2008 carnival was a chilly wet affair, with heavy rain hitting the parade around 10pm, when many of the spectators headed for shelter. But the participants soldiered on as if nothing was wrong, soaked to the skin (many showing more skin than clothing). |
