| Ribeira Brava has it's own carnival parade for the schools and children of the towns and districts of Ribeira Brava (Serra de Água, Campanario, Tabua, & Ribeira Brava). This took place on 1st February 2008, with a strong environmental theme. The children usually make their own costumes, assisted by teachers and parents, often using scrap materials. The carnival parade ('carnaval' on Madeira) includes many hundreds of youngsters from babies and children through to accompanying adults. The parade winds it's way around the streets of Ribeira Brava, accompanied by portable music, school bands, and singing, and takes about an hour. Streamers and confetti all form part of the parade, and the town needs a good clean up afterwards. It's wonderful to see everybody participating in the parade, young and old, parents and teachers (and even a cat - see top right photo), and it is such a colourful event that it is doubtful that the photos here can do the event justice. |
