| Getting To Madeira The number of direct flights from European destinations to Madeira continues to grow, with low cost airlines now coming in with excellent ticket prices. For example, from the UK, it has never been easier or cheaper since Easyjet decided to include Madeira in its scheduled flights. Go to 'Flights' using the yellow button on the left hand menu bar to find out more. Once on the island of Madeira, or on Porto Santo Island, you will have the choice of buses, taxis, or hire car to make your way around, or of course you can take organised excursions. On these pages you will find details of how to make enquiries, on prices and schedules, book your travel requirements, and hopefully gain some useful advice. Just use the yellow menu buttons to the left, and then check out our advertisers to find yourself a great deal. For years, everything on and about Madeira has revolved around Funchal, leaving the presence of tourism in some of the most beautiful locations on the island almost non existent. If you take the time to look at some of the information provided on these pages, you should be able to find everything you need to know to enable you to explore Madeira island more fully, and hopefully spread the benefits of tourism much further afield. And don't forget Port Santo Island also. It a great trip on the ferry, as well as a beautiful location to visit, or relax on its famous long white sandy beach. In our Leisure section, you can find out whats on and when, and if you find something of interest, then work out the best way to get there. | Ferry Service To The Canary Islands Probably a little known fact for Madeira's visitors is the existence of a seasonal ferry service between Madeira and the Canary Islands. Naviera Armas runs a ferry line from Gran Canaria (Las Palmas), Tenerife, and Lanzarote (Arrecife) to Funchal, Madeira. The journey duration is around 13 hours. The ferry ship from 2008 onwards is likely to be the 'Volcán of Tijarafe', weighing around 20,500 tons and formally launched in August 2007, after costing around €90 million to build. | During the summer of 2008 a ferry service will commence between Madeira and a port in mainland Portugal ... something which hasn't happened since 1975. The port is unlikely to be Lisbon, but discussions are still underway, with the favourites being either the Algarve or Alentejo. The ferry journey will take around 24 hours, and will transport passengers, cars, and goods. Citing an example of a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) the cost is expected to be less than half of that by flying withTAP, but that will depend on the options chosen for sleeping and eating. |
