| Buses / Public Transport There are no trains on Madeira or Porto Santo islands, taxis are expensive, and hire cars are often inconvenient and unavailable, and cycling .... forget it! There are however 5 different bus companies that operate on Madeira and 1 on Porto Santo. The company Horários Do Funchal, provides the service to the city of Funchal and nearby towns and villages. The company Rodoeste, covers the island west of Funchal, right up to the north west tip (marked in red on the map below) SAM (Sociedade de Automóveis da Madeira), covers the island east of the island, right up to the north east tip (in black on the map below). The smallest bus company and service, 'Empresa de Automóveis do Caniço', covers just the one route between Funchal and Caniço The Airport Bus, but that just covers the route between Funchal and the airport at Santa Cruz. See the map below for more details Please note : 'Bus' in Portuguese is 'Autocarro', and 'Bus Stop' is 'Paragem' |

Buses meet the incoming ferry boat each day, and charge €1 for the trip into the main town of Vila Baleira (just over 3km). |
| Empresa de Automóveis do Caniço Covering only the route between Caniço area and Funchal, there are 6 services a day from various points in and around Caniço. The busiest route runs over 20 services a day. There is a garage for car parking in Caniço. Click Here For Routes & Schedules |
