News - February 2008 Apparently Madeira is going to have it's own airline (probably just to keep up with the neighbour ... SAT in the Azores). It's going to be called FlyMI (Fly Madeira Islands). They intend to be airborne by the end of this year, with two Boeing 737's 'new generation'. They claim they will service the north european tourist market, with some flights between Lisbon and Madeira and Porto Santo Island. They already have a website www.flymi.pt . This is the 4th attempt to create and airline company with a Madeira base, all the others falling by the wayside for one reason or another.
News - December 2007 At the end of last year, the European Commission approved changes to the residents travel discount scheme for air travel between mainland Portugal and Madeira. The scheme, originally approved by the Commission in 1998, is available to all residents of Madeira and certain qualifying students. It is not available for mainland Portugal residents. The new rules allow a fixed subsidy of €60 per return journey, as long as the fares used by the residents and students are higher than this amount. Another new change is that the payment of the subsidy will occur after the journey, with travellers having to request payment from the authorities, having proved that they are eligible.
News - February 2008 SATA (the Acores based airline) is to run weekly flights between Madeira and the Spanish city of Madrid between 7th July and 22nd September this year. But it seems the charter is purely to bring spaniards to Madeira. The announcement pretty much mirrors the TAP summer schedules, which also show a weekly flight between Madeira and Madrid during the summer period.
