| Taxis, Minibuses & Private Hire on Madeira & Porto Santo You will find hundreds of taxis on Madeira island, far too many in fact. Funchal alone has nearly 500, whereas the other regions on the island are likely to have over 30 each. Porto Santo island also has around 20. Taxis are instantly recognisable by their yellow and blue colouring, mostly Mercedes. All should be licenced, and all should have predefined prices for certain routes displayed inside for passengers to see. All private hire is done through the regular street taxis, but you should be aware that taxi's are not licenced excursion operators, so if you stop off somewhere on a trip, you are not insured once you step outside the taxi. All normal taxis and liveried minibuses should have meters, which should be switched on for your journey, unless you have hired a taxi for a period of time, for a half day excursion, for example. If you hire a taxi and the meter is not present then it is for tourist and excursion use. All taxis without meters MUST by law have a price list in the window or somewhere available for clients. It must say either a price per kilometer or for instance specific prices from town to airport etc. So before entering this taxi, you should ask for their price list if it is not visible in or on the car. However, you should take care to avoid some unscrupulous taxi drivers. Tourists and foreigners can be considered a prime target to make something extra, and there are many anecdotal examples of charges well over the correct price, though normally a few extra euros would be nearer the mark. Hence, it is quite important to look for the meter or ask for a price before getting into a taxi. Several taxi drivers / companies have websites booking services that tell you the price before booking. The best way to find these would be to do a search on google or other search engine using the keyword 'taxi' & 'madeira', or 'airport transfer'. Otherwise you can use the same keywords on the Yellow Pages website - see the link below, or search the classified ads using the search box on this website. To hire a taxi or minibus for a day or half day, perhaps for an excursion, can be economical, especially if the taxi is full. You will sometimes see these prices displayed in Funchal, though you are of course free to negotiate your own deal. Tipping is optional, though it should be said that local people rarely tip for anything. However, if you think the taxi price was fair and everything else was satisfactory, then a tip would be welcomed, as the taxi running costs are quite amazing and customers far too few. You can ask the taxi driver for a receipt for your fare, and if you intend to complain about the service or the price charged you must ask for a receipt, and retain it as proof of the journey or price paid. |

| COMPLAINTS Unlike other businesses and public services, taxi drivers are not obliged to have a complaints book (Livro de Reclamacões). The consumer protection authority for Portugal is : DECO (Associação Portuguesa para a Defesa do Consumidor) Rua de Artilharia 1, nº 79, 4º , 1269-160 Lisboa, Tel : 00351 213 710 200 Their advice is that In order to make a formal complaint (about either a specific driver or taxi company or a general complaint about taxis on Madeira, you should contact : Direcção-Geral de Transportes Terrestres e Fluviais,Ministério das Obras Públicas, Transportes e Comunicações this is the authority that fiscalises and inspects taxi drivers and taxi companies. website , OR Antral ( Associação Nacional dos Transportes Rodoviários em Automoveis Ligeiros) most taxi drivers / companies are members there. website Complaints must always be done in writing, sent by registered mail with "aviso de recepção" (proof of delivery). There is a taxi association based on Madeira, but their ability to deal with complaints is doubtful.
